Pima County deputies who arrive first on the scene of a medical emergency have a new tool to help them render medical care until paramedics arrive.
The Sheriff's Department is uploading the American Red Cross first-aid application to all department-issued smartphones. The app will give deputies, corrections officers and other employees "instant access to information on how to handle the most common first aid situations," according to a department news release.
App features include:
• Twenty-one first-aid topics arranged alphabetically so they can be found quickly.
• Prioritized steps to take in an emergency.
• Short videos to demonstrate each first-aid scenario.
• Preloaded content providing instant access even without Internet connection or cell service.

The department already issues individual first-aid kits to all deputies so they can render basic care. Anyone can download the free app to a smartphone. It is available from Apple and Android app stores. Search for "Red Cross first aid."
