Clods of dirt flew through the air and ear-piercing sounds of engines roared as riders on ATVs, motocross bikes, even mini-motocross bikes sped around the dirt track at Pima Motorsports Park Sunday.
Each class, grouped by type of vehicle, soared over the jumps and swung around corners for practice rounds. The park at 11700 S. Harrison Road, which draws riders from all over Tucson, was supposed to have a race that morning. But with the rising heat and the weak economy, race participants have dwindled, said Stacey Waffensmith, an organizer for the park and a regular motocross rider herself.
"Our night races are a lot more popular," she said. "We have some of the best stadium lights in Southern Arizona."
But even with the faltering economy, racers came out to practice on the course in the morning.
The park is preparing for more races and the World Extreme Rock Crawling Championship Series this weekend. The event will begin at 9 a.m. Saturday and end Sunday evening.
