A seminar Sunday will explore the historical basis for Lutheranism, how 19th century Lutheranism was affected by mergers with various Reformed movements, and how Lutheranism has been shaped over the past 500 years.
The seminar, hosted by Desert Hope Lutheran Church, will begin at 10:30 a.m. at Gridley Middle School, 350 S. Harrison Road. It will be led by Susan Karant-Nunn, regents' professor of history and director of late medieval and reformation studies at the University of Arizona.
Her lecture is titled "Emerging Differences: Luther's Evolution Away from the Catholic Church."
As the 500th anniversary of the Reformation approaches in 2017, this is a rare opportunity to learn more about this history-changing event from a world-renowned Reformation scholar.
A reception will follow the event, providing an opportunity to meet the speaker.

Karant-Nunn has been associated with the UA since 1999. She is president of the Society for Reformation Research (North America). Her most recent book is "The Reformation of Feeling: Shaping the Religious Emotions in Early Modern Germany" (Oxford University Press, 2010), and she is writing a book tentatively titled "Martin Luther's Body."
Karant-Nunn was a contributing speaker in the critically acclaimed PBS television documentary "Martin Luther." Her research focuses on the social and cultural history of early modern Europe, with emphasis on the German-speaking lands during the Reformation.
Beginning with late-medieval religious and social ferment and producing the 16th century Protestant reformer Martin Luther, the Reformation sparked local and international conflicts.
Religious conflict led to wars and the emigration of thousands of people seeking to escape persecution. Karant-Nunn's work sheds light on the deeper, multiple causes and effects of efforts to define a true faith.
The seminar is free and open to the public.
Church services will be held at 9 a.m., followed by the seminar in the school cafeteria.
