A group of seventh- to ninth- graders came a step closer to achieving their race-car driving dreams when they attended a kart racing camp held by Arizona Youth University.
The students learned technical aspects of the car, the proper racing lines and various responsibilities while driving on the Musselman Honda Circuit track, 11800 S. Harrison Road. The camp was held June 8 through 12.
"Basically, we do it because we love the sport. We love Formula One. We don't have it (Formula One) here in Arizona or in the United States. This is about as close as we get to it," said Southern Arizona Kart Club president Charles Quiroz.
Student Erin Kaplan, 13, grew up around the sport when her father was racing. "I just like the speed, and I guess the adrenaline rushes. It's cool," Erin said. "I like being out on the track and the pressure of the car moving you one way or another."
