TUSD is to break ground today on its new transportation center, which will serve the growing southwest side of the district.
The $4.5 million facility, at 4750 W. Jeffrey Road, will allow for shorter bus runs, savings in fuel costs and better transportation services for students.
The transportation center is next to Lawrence Intermediate School, near West Valencia Road and South Camino de Oeste. The Tucson Unified School District also has central and east-side transportation facilities.
The center will serve 6,000 students and will consist of parking for 100 buses. There will also be on-site fueling stations, and a small repair facility with two to four bays, parts storage and offices along with a shower, restrooms, lockers and a lounge area for drivers and staff.
It will be ready for operation for the 2013-14 school year.
