Marana schools hold math, science nights
A pair of Marana Unified School District elementary schools made science and math come alive with special events.
Rattlesnake Ridge Elementary School held its second annual Science Night Nov. 29.
The event was meant to spark interest in science and learning about nature. Attendees perused hands-on exhibits and science projects. Lizards, snakes, scorpions and bugs, among other creatures, were on display.
Butterfield Elementary School staged a Math Games Night Dec. 4.
The first in what's planned to be an annual series, the event used games to teach math and problem-solving skills.
Early ed program enrolling kids now

Marana High School's early childhood-education program is enrolling kids ages 3 to 5 for its Tiger Cub Preschool.
Classes, from 9 a.m. to noon Monday and Tuesday and 9 to 11:30 a.m. Wednesday and Thursday, will start Feb. 4 and run through May 15.
There will be no preschool sessions Fridays or during school holidays or AIMS test days.
Tuition for the 14-week program, in which students help kids through lesson plans and activities, is $45 per child. Participating kids must be immunized and potty trained.

Elks group gives kids a shopping spree
Christmas came early for 35 Roadrunner Elementary School students, courtesy of a Dec. 1 shopping spree and luncheon hosted by Catalina Mountain Elks Lodge No. 2815.
The students ranged from kindergartners to sixth-graders. Elks volunteers helped each child pick out $140 worth of clothing and shoes at the Tucson Mall's JCPenney, which offered discounts on the purchases.
After shopping, the students attended a lunch party at the Catalina Mountain Elks Lodge, 10645 N. Oracle Road.
Santa and Mrs. Claus were guests of honor, arriving on a Golder Ranch Fire Department truck. The couple gave the kids toys and school supplies.
"Seeing the joy and appreciation on the faces of the children is one of our most gratifying experiences," Robert Hurt of Catalina Mountain Elks Lodge said in a new release.
Added Joyce Garcia, who co-chaired the event with Hurt, "This is one of our favorite times of the year. The students at Roadrunner are so kind, and you can truly see how appreciative they are and what a difference the day makes for these wonderful children."
