DECATUR, Ill. — Police in Illinois are investigating the bizarre Decatur case of the booby-trapped cigarette involving a suspect who also hopped it with a kidnapped pet rabbit.
Detective Sgt. Brian Earles with the Decatur Police Department said the strange incident unfolded on the morning of Oct. 4 when a 25-year-old woman returned to her apartment home in the 500 block of South Church Street.
“She noticed that some stuff in her apartment had been moved,” and that aroused the woman’s suspicions, Earles said.
“And when she went to get a cigarette, she noticed the cigarette felt heavier than usual — and she found a firecracker inside it.”
Earles said the victim believed her ex-boyfriend was responsible for sabotaging her cigarette, and then she received another shock: “She discovered her pet rabbit, ‘Starfire’, was missing,” Earles added.

The detective said the former boyfriend breeds rabbits and had previously given the missing bunny to the victim as a gift. “And he now appears to have taken his rabbit back,” Earles said.
The 30-year-old suspect was being sought on charges that include attempted aggravated battery risking great bodily harm and theft.
