Walton foundation gives $27.5M to ASU program
TEMPE - Arizona State University's efforts to promote sustainability have received a $27.5 million donation from the foundation funded by Walmart Chairman Rob Walton and his wife, Melani.
ASU's Global Institute of Sustainability will use the gift announced Thursday for these purposes in the coming five years:
Providing seed funding for promising sustainability research ideas, training the next generation of sustainability scholars and practitioners, and education efforts.
The institute aims to help cities and businesses avoid depleting the environment.
Rob Walton is the eldest son of Walmart founder Sam Walton and serves on the sustainability institute's board. He and his wife have a home in Paradise Valley.

Appellate court backs Canyon-area developers
TUSAYAN - The state Appeals Court has sided with an Italian real estate group that's planning a major development outside the Grand Canyon.
A group of Tusayan residents gathered enough signatures to put approvals by the Town Council that pave the way for hotels, commercial space and hundreds of homes on the ballot.
But Stilo Development Group USA sued, arguing the referendums are legally insufficient because the critics did not properly register their political committee.
The appellate court agreed with Stilo this week, upholding a lower court's decision to keep the referendums off the May ballot. One judge dissented.
An attorney for the committee, Ken Frakes, said the committee decided Thursday to let the ruling stand.
