PHOENIX — An Arizona telemarketer must pay more than $100,000 to settle a consumer fraud lawsuit.
The Arizona Attorney General's Office announced the default judgment Friday against Publishers Service Office.
According to the suit, Burudi Mwonyoni's company allegedly defrauded consumers in the U.S. through a magazine subscription scam.
The company made 48,000 calls a month through an automatic dialer to sell new or renewed subscriptions.
It is accused of falsely claiming magazine publishers granted them authority to charge or bill consumers on their behalf.
Publishers Service Office also disguised telephone numbers they used so consumers would think the numbers originated from the area where they lived.
The $110,000 judgment covers civil penalties, attorneys' fees and other costs.
