PHOENIX — A new dress code covering hundreds of teachers in the Phoenix area bans extreme hairstyles, facial piercings and distracting tattoos.
The policy adopted earlier this month promotes modesty and professionalism, officials in the Litchfield Elementary School District say .
It’s too restrictive, some educators tell the Arizona Republic. They worry about how the rules will be enforced.
The policy covers more than 600 teachers in 13 elementary and middle schools in Goodyear, Avondale, Buckeye and Litchfield Park.
Many school districts ask teachers to dress professionally and cover offensive tattoos. Some smaller school districts have tougher dress codes for teachers.
Litchfield’s rules have some prohibitions common in workplaces, including rubber flip-flops, visible undergarments and cleavage and bare midriffs.
