PHOENIX — There's a crescendo of activity taking place at the Musical Instrument Museum in northeast Phoenix.
Construction of the 75,000-square-foot, $150 million building is still under way, with an opening date set for next April.
Details of the opening have not yet been released. It will be the first major museum in the Phoenix area since the Children's Museum of Phoenix opened in downtown Phoenix in June 2008.
Workers are likely to move in before the end of the year, with exhibit installation expected to begin as soon as October.
When it opens to visitors, the Musical Instrument Museum will feature as many as 10,000 instruments from around the world, including familiar ones such as guitars, drums and pianos, all common in American popular music.
A celebrity gallery will feature instruments associated with well-known musicians, including the upright Steinway piano on which the late John Lennon wrote "Imagine," a well-known hit after the Beatles' breakup.

Other museum galleries will focus on geographical regions, with instruments that were developed and built in Asia, Africa, the Americas, Australia and Europe.
Outside the museum will be bronze artwork that combines aspects of a variety of instruments, with elements from guitars, trumpets, lutes, a violin bow and a lyre.
