Four people were killed and 8 were injured in a fiery crash Saturday on Interstate 10 west of Phoenix that involved multiple vehicles, authorities said Sunday in an updated account of the wreck that reduced the number of fatalities from earlier accounts.
The crash happened about 1 p.m. Saturday on eastbound I-10 about 14 miles west of Tonopah, the Arizona Department of Public Safety said. Tonopah is about 50 miles west of Phoenix.
Late Saturday the state DPS had said six people were killed and 13 were injured. But those numbers were updated Sunday.
"There are four confirmed fatalities, two people in critical condition who are receiving life-saving treatment, one person admitted for care and precautionary treatment, and five more people who were treated and released. These individuals were transported to numerous hospitals in the Valley area," the state DPS said Sunday in a news release.

Troopers are trying to determine if blowing dust in the area was a factor in the wreck that involved six commercial motor vehicles, four passenger vehicles, a van and a recreational vehicle towing a trailer, the agency said.
The eastbound lanes of I-10 reopened early Sunday morning.
"The Arizona Highway Patrol is conducting an extensive and detailed investigation into this tragic collision. Due to the number of vehicles and persons involved, this will take some time," the release said. "At this time, investigators believe there was an initial collision, followed by one or more secondary collisions, which resulted in additional injuries and deaths."
The agency on Sunday was still working to contact the families of some of those in the crash.
Anyone with additional information are asked to report it to the state DPS at 1-888-4AZTIPS (1-888-429-8477) or submit the information online at www.azactic.gov.
