PHOENIX - The Maricopa County Board of Supervisors on Wednesday appointed state Rep. Chuck Gray to fill a Senate vacancy created by the death of fellow Mesa Republican Marilyn Jarrett.
Gray was one of three people nominated Tuesday night by Republican precinct committee members in Legislative District 19 in east Mesa.
Gray, a 48-year-old former Mesa police officer, has served in the House since 2003 and is the chairman of the House Committee on Federal Mandates and Property Rights.
The other two nominees were Rep. Gary Pierce and legislative candidate Kirk Adams.
Pierce had withdrawn from consideration, sending the Supervisors a letter to that effect Wednesday morning.
The selection of Gray means county supervisors will now have to pick a replacement for the resulting House vacancy.

Jarrett, 67, died Friday in a Phoenix hospital a day after being found unconscious in her senate office. She reportedly suffered a brain hemorrhage.
Gray, who was the only one of the three candidates planning to run for the seat in the fall, had decided to run earlier in the year after Jarrett announced plans to seek a justice of the peace seat.
