Governor candidate Andy Biggs seems to have trouble with Supreme Court sizes. He voted to increase Arizona's when Doug Ducey could name the two new justices, but supports never adding to the U.S. Supreme Court, which hasn't been done since 1869.
Not the only double standard Andy Biggs holds, of course.
Andy, your partisanship is showing! Tucson deserves better.

Price of incompetence
As a retired, senior military officer and commander, I could not and would not tolerate incompetence. Doing so meant risking lives, taxpayer money, and ultimately national security.

We now endure incompetence daily from individuals posing as commander in chief and secretary of defense. Examples:
Alienation of our decades-long allies. We need collaborative coalitions in an ever-threatening world.
Impetuous initiation of another no-exit-strategy Middle East war with no attention to the political, military and economic consequences.
Inadequate support to Ukraine waging a surrogate war for our benefit against Russia.
Dismissing experienced flag officers during a war.
Failure to lean forward on replenishing weapon stockpiles and logistical support to troops on the pointy end of the spear.
The Constitution rightly demands military deference to elected civilian control. It does not demand tolerance of incompetence.

Dear USPS: You are the best in the world at delivering the mail. That is your job and your entire purpose for existence.
In 1775, the Second Continental Congress established our postal system, naming Benjamin Franklin as the first Postmaster General. Now, after 251 years of service, you are being told to muscle in on states’ rights to conduct their elections.
If the current regime gets its way, you will be in the business of deciding who gets their mail and who does not. You will be terrible at it because it is not your job. You must resist their demands. Your one and only job is to deliver the mail!

Weather in the newspaper
Has anyone actually looked at the weather forecast for Tucson this monsoon? Nearly every single day there is a 55% probability of rain. Now, I don't know how this works, but even the TV news weather reports change up their predictions on a daily basis.
And let’s not even mention that the weather is buried on a half-page in the first sports section (in the E-edition, there is another sports section exactly the same as the first one near the end of the edition). Surely there is a better location for something that affects everybody since sports does not!

Don't let hatred reign
Sometimes the opinion columns of Froma Harrop read like pieces in gossip columns, but her latest one on Sept. 12 was a rant against New York Mayor Mamdani. She was critical of Mamdani’s stance against Israel.
During his 9/11 speech on Friday at the Pentagon, Pete Hegseth repeatedly used the phrase "Islamic terrorists" instead of Al-Qaeda terrorists. He would be upset if people referred to the Trump administration's attacks on Venezuela, boats in the Caribbean, and Iran as the work of "Christian terrorists." True Christians and Muslims do not condone actions that work against peace. Hate speech does nothing to promote peace.
Much was said on the anniversary of 9/11 about the unity and kindness the U.S. experienced on 9/12 and how sad it is that we don't have that anymore. Let's not give space in our media to voices spewing hatred.

Socialism vs. the Constitution
Last month I showcased the intentions of the Democratic Socialists of America. This radical fringe establishment demands the abolishment of the Senate and Electoral College, and replacement of the President and Supreme Court with an executive and judiciary chosen by and subordinate to Congress.
Our Constitution is history, and Democrats rule.
Old guard Democrats present the party as a big tent that welcomes new ideas — but with “moderation.” Keep the Senate but make D.C. a state; new Senate seats in perpetuity. Retain the Supreme Court but raise the number of justices to assure a progressive majority . Preserve the presidency but neutralize the Electoral College through the National Popular Vote Interstate Compact, now law in 18 states, plus D.C., which awards a state’s electoral votes to the winner of the national popular vote.
Our Constitution remains intact, and Democrats rule.
Either path leads to the same destination, so I’m voting Republican.

Immigration policy
Sunday’s Star article “Why Just Me?” is an example of what’s wrong with the administration's policy on immigration. It is based on a lie that’s constantly repeated by members of the DJT team. Wake up MAGA Republicans, these people are not a threat to the American way of life. Their “crime” is walking across a border to look for a better way of life. We have always been a country that welcomes immigrants. The Statue of Liberty defines our moral code. We would never have been able to fight two World Wars, Korea, Vietnam and the latest fiasco with Iran without immigrants. There are thousands of immigrants’ bodies buried around the world, immigrants who died for the life we live today. When DOGE reduced federal government agencies, that did not save money or reduce the size of the government. The Big Beautiful Bill simply moved the money from citizen programs into Homeland Security and ICE. Keep this in mind when you vote on Nov. 3.
