Letter: SB 1431, universal school voucher expansion

I am not a teacher, simply a concerned parent who joined Save Our Schools AZ to help challenge universal school vouchers. As I look around our state and its use of education dollars, I see a whole lot of schemes that divert public money into private hands (vouchers, private school tuition tax credits) and self enrichment projects (privately run publicly financed charters). The universal voucher expansion SB 1431 is just the latest assault on public education. If we really care about educating all kids, could we please start asking teachers what they need and what works instead of letting politicians and reform profiteers push agendas that serve the few over the many? When you look at who is behind SB 1431 (DeVos, Koch brothers) and who is working to challenge it (SOS AZ, a grassroots group of teachers, parents, and retirees) it becomes clear who this law is really intended to serve.
