LAS VEGAS - Challenger Chris Weidman knocked out Anderson Silva in the second round of their UFC middleweight title fight on Saturday night, ending the champion's long stay on top of the division.
Weidman landed a short left hook that sent Silva to the canvas, and then pounced on the ultimate fighting star, landing a few more shots before the ref stopped the bout at 1:18. Weidman (10-0) ended Silva's 17-fight win streak and nearly seven-year reign as champion. Silva is 33-5.
"I felt I was destined for this. But, still, it felt a little far-fetched," Weidman said at the MGM Grand Garden.
In the co-main event, ex-lightweight champ Frankie Edgar beat Charles Oliveira in a unanimous decision.

AX 3 DOMAINES, France - Favorite Chris Froome used the first tough mountain stage to take command of the Tour de France on Saturday, leaving two-time champion Alberto Contador and other challengers behind on a grueling climb in the Pyrenees to seize the leader's yellow jersey with a dominant win in the eighth stage.
Froome's ride resembled Lance Armstrong at his best, when the American used to punish his opponents early in the race to take control. Armstrong was stripped of seven Tour titles last year for serial doping. Froome said his achievements won't need to be erased.
"It is a bit of a personal mission to show that the sport has changed," said Froome, who leads teammate Richie Porte by 51 seconds, third-place Alejandro Valverde by 1:25, Contador by 1:51, Andy Schleck by 4:00 and Cadel Evans by 4:36.
