Toronto Blue Jays outfielder Lourdes Gurriel Jr. was named American League Player of the Week on Tuesday after a big run of games that helped the Jays further cement their hold on a playoff position.
Gurriel batted .467 (14 for 30) for the period ending Sunday with five runs scored, three doubles, two home runs, six RBIs, three walks and a .767 slugging percentage across eight games.
He ranked first in the AL in hits (14) and total bases (23); tied for second in extra-base hits (5) and third in batting average.
Gurriel had a season-high four hits and scored twice in Sunday's 10-8 win over Boston in Fenway Park.
He enters Tuesday night's game against the Yankees batting .301, his highest average since Aug. 6. He has 10 doubles, six homers, 23 RBIs and a .497 slugging percentage.
