Desert View had defeated Sunnyside just once ever in football, and that was 27 years ago.
That meant nothing Friday, as the undefeated Jaguars (5-0) rolled past their rivals with a 42-20 win over the visiting Blue Devils.
Desert View came into the game looking to continue its fast start in the hopes of making the playoffs for the first time since 1996. It was paced by senior Alex Courtemanche, who ran for 242 yards and three touchdowns.
The Blue Devils defense held their own much of the first half, but Desert View still led 14-0 at halftime.
The Jaguars turned it on in the second half. Courtemanche and Desert View wore down the Sunnyside defense with a consistent ground attack.
Courtemanche is one of the remaining players from the 0-10 team two seasons ago.

“We go into each game having a winning mindset,” Courtemanche said. “There are 18 seniors here that have worked hard to get where we are.”
Sunnyside (2-4) made things interesting in the fourth quarter by scoring 20 points, but it proved to be too little too late for a Blue Devil offense that was harassed constantly by the Jaguar defensive line.
Courtemanche recognized the importance of the win, but also knows it is a long season.
“The win is big for the community, and the past classes who came out to congratulate us,” he said. “We have to do a good job of remaining hungry and humble the rest of the way.”
