EDMONTON, Alberta — The Edmonton Oilers traded their best player, honored one of their greats and then went out Tuesday night and lost to one of the NHL's worst.
Curtis Joseph made 26 saves, and the Phoenix Coyotes defeated Edmonton 3-0 on the day the Oilers retired Mark Messier's No. 11 and dealt All-Star Ryan Smyth to the Islanders.
The Oilers mustered just two shots in the first period, compared to 10 for the Coyotes.
● Avalanche 3, Blue Jackets 2: In Denver, Peter Budaj stopped 21 shots as the Avalanche survived a late scare to defeat the Blue Jackets.
Andrew Brunette and Paul Stastny extended point streaks with a goal each. Brunette has an 11-game point streak and Stastny a 13-game streak. Mark Rycroft added his fifth goal of the year.
● Islanders 6, Flyers 5, OT: In Uniondale, N.Y., Trent Hunter scored his second goal on a power play with 30.7 seconds left in overtime to lift the Islanders.

Jason Blake had a hat trick and an assist for the Islanders, and Chris Simon also scored. Rick DiPietro stopped 29 shots, and the Islanders improved to 5-1-0 on their seven game home stand.
● Blues 3, Canucks 1: In St. Louis, Doug Weight scored twice in the third period, getting the game-winner on a breakaway to lead the Blues.
Petr Cajanek found Weight as he rushed in on the right side alone and then slapped it past Roberto Luongo to give St. Louis a 2-1 lead. He added his second goal — and eighth of the season — on the power play with just over two minutes left.
● Devils 1, Penguins 0: In Pittsburgh, Martin Brodeur made 31 saves for his league-leading 12th shutout of the season, and Jamie Langenbrunner scored as the Devils beat the Penguins.
Brodeur set a career-high for shutouts in a season with the 92nd of his career. He's third on the career list, two behind George Hainesworth and 11 behind leader Terry Sawchuk.
● Senators 4, Hurricanes 2: In Raleigh, N.C., Wade Redden scored with 4:48 left to lead the Senators over the Hurricanes.
Dany Heatley and Anton Volchenkov also scored, and Jason Spezza had an empty-net goal and two assists for the Senators, who scored three third-period goals to win their seventh in eight games.
● Sabres 6, Maple Leafs 1: In Toronto, Jochen Hecht scored twice and had an assist to lead Buffalo to a rout over the Maple Leafs.
Jason Pominville, Drew Stafford, Derek Roy and Clarke MacArthur scored for the Eastern Conference-leading Sabres.
● Panthers 6, Capitals 5, SO: In Washington, Olli Jokinen scored three goals, and the Panthers won their first shootout of the season, using goals by Jozef Stumpel and Ville Peltonen to beat the Capitals.
The Panthers were 0-6 in shootouts and 1-13 in games that extended beyond regulation.
● Stars 2, Lightning 1: In Tampa, Fla., Ladislav Nagy scored with 3:25 left in overtime to lift the Stars over the Lightning.
Nagy scored from the slot off a pass from Mike Ribeiro, who was positioned behind the net.
● Rangers 4, Canadiens 0: In New York, Marcel Hossa scored two goals for the Rangers, who shook off injuries to beat the Canadiens.
Henrik Lundqvist made 19 saves in his third shutout this season and fifth in two seasons.
● Red Wings 4, Blackhawks 1: In Chicago, Tomas Holmstrom scored two goals, and Dominik Hasek made 24 saves to lead the Red Wings.
Kyle Calder had a goal and assist in his first game with Detroit, which is 10-2-2 in its last 14 games.
