Star columnist Greg Hansen's annual list of Tucson's Top 100 sports people is loaded with athletes from 20 sports (yes, handball and wrestling are included) and 2005 standouts from sports administration, officiating, architecture, marketing and coaching.
The list does not include Annika Sorenstam or Gilbert Arenas or any other former UA athlete who blew through Tucson, a temporary stop en route to professional wealth and fame.
The Top 100 list traditionally honors those who grew up in Tucson or spent the year performing, coaching or toiling here. Thus, expect to see Champions Tour regular Don Pooley rather than PGA Tour breakout star Jason Gore.
What about ex-Wildcat Lance Briggs, an NFL All-Pro linebacker for the Chicago Bears? We prefer someone like New Mexico State safety Matt Griebel, a Canyon del Oro High School grad who ranked No. 8 nationally in tackles.
