San Diego Comic Con – the holy grail for comic lovers – may be over but there are still comic conventions all across the country.
What they offer – in case you didn’t know – is a chance to buy lots of merchandise themed to characters, panels discussing films and storylines, and “encounters” with stars. Those autograph sessions used to be affordable. Now, it’s common to see an actor who played a stray character in “Star Wars” command big bucks.
Those autograph sessions afford fans a minute or so in the presence of an actor. But some do have rules. You may have to pay extra for a selfie, you may not be able to stand too close, and if you bring something that you want signed, you could be charged even more. Spending $200 just to see a big-name actor isn’t out of the question.
Is it worth it? Ask non-fans and they’d say no. But the faithful are willing to hit the ATM for a chance to see the voice of Jar Jar Binks (Ahmed Best).

On the secondary market, those autographs don’t always fetch the same dollars. But then, if you were the one watching a photograph being signed, it could be priceless.
Go to one of the cons, and you’ll be shocked. There are long lines for people you don’t even recognize. And if you happen to see someone you want to meet, just be sure you have enough cash. Many don’t take credit cards.
Reminiscing, it seems, comes at a price.
