Singing competition focus of 'Harmony' at Loft tonight
It's the biggest talent contest you've never heard of unless you happen to have a passion for that quintessentially quirky world of barbershop quartets.
For a glimpse of the mayhem of the International Championships of Barbershop Singing contest — think "American Idol" for barbershop singers — check out "American Harmony" at The Loft Cinema tonight. The film focuses on four quartets vying for the top prize. It turns out to be the closest and most controversial matchup in the contest's 70-year history, according to press materials.
About 50 quartets compete for top honors, which are really nothing more than bragging rights. No record deal, arena tour or chance to cry on live TV.
The Loft, 3233 E. Speedway, will show the movie as part of its One Hit Wonders series, which screens new movies for one night only. The show begins at 7:30 p.m. with a performance by Tucson's own Barbershop Experience choir.
Tickets are $8.75 for adults, $5.75 for seniors and kids.
Can't get enough of those distinctive barbershop harmonies? The Barbershop Harmony Society is scheduled to host its 2011 Mid-Winter Convention in Tucson beginning Jan. 18, according to the society's Web site.

Wanda Sykes' new comedy special, 'Ima Be Me,' on HBO Saturday night
Wanda Sykes likes to say she has a French wife.
"That sounds better than saying she's white," the comedian quips in her new HBO comedy special, "Ima Be Me."
It's an irreverent, tart, politically incorrect, in-your-face autobiographical dissertation about being black, a lesbian, a new mom and a comedian.
In other words, it's vintage Wanda Sykes.
This is the second HBO special for Sykes, who is also in HBO's "Curb Your Enthusiasm." It was taped live in August at the Warner Theater in Washington, D.C.
It airs at 10 p.m. Saturday on HBO.
