Texas bluesman Smokin' Joe Kubek loved coming to Tucson.
"Every time we’ve played there, there’s been a lot of people that’s been ready to hear us,” he said last March on the eve of a show with longtime musical partner Bnois King at The Boondocks Lounge. “I’ve always enjoyed playing there, and Cathy (Warner), who owns the place, she’s always taking care of us. She makes these beautiful tuna fish sandwiches at the end of the night.”
Kubek's show last March 6 to help the Boondocks celebrate its 19th anniversary was his final Tucson show. Kubek died Sunday after suffering a heart attack before he was to go on stage in Wilmington, Delaware.
Kubek was 58.
