The chimichanga birthright debate goes national this weekend with the widely-distributed Parade newspaper magazine lending credence to El Charro Café's claim to have invented the deep-fried burrito dish.
In an article touting foods that were born in America, the magazine downplays other Arizona restaurants that take credit for the chimi's creation, adding "there's no denying the superiority of the giant chimichanga still served at El Charro."
The Parade story does have one fact in dispute: It said the chimi was created in the "mid-20th century" when El Charro founder Monica Flin dropped a burrito into a vat of bubbling cooking oil. According to history passed down over the generations, Flin's flub was in 1922, which is nearly 25 years earlier than the date cited by folks over at Macayo’s Mexican Kitchen for their accidental chimi creation.
