Canadian poutine chain launches here
Tucson’s first poutine restaurant, US Fries, opened Saturday at 340 N. Fourth Ave.
It’s the first of what owner and founder Tom Jones of Calgary, Alberta, Canada, hopes will be a chain of restaurants serving the popular Canadian novelty.
Poutine is french fries slathered in brown gravy with cheese curds poking here and there and then topped with several choices of items, from pulled pork to roast beef. Jones said he will have about 10 varieties on the menu including ham and pineapple, pulled pork and pickles and traditional unadorned poutine. Prices are around $7.50 to $10.50.
US Fries is open from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Mondays-Wednesdays, 11 a.m. to 3 a.m. Thursdays-Saturdays and 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sundays.

While US Fries is Tucson’s first restaurant devoted to poutine, it’s not the first to serve it. The Zany Beaver food truck rolled out its versions in August 2013.
Arizona Restaurant Week starts Friday

Did someone say free java? We’re there
The only thing better than coffee in the morning is free coffee in the morning.
Now through Sept. 29, McDonald’s is hosting its second national Free Coffee Event. Notice the word “free” in the name; we love that word.
The deal — a free small coffee — is good at pretty much every McDonald’s you hit, but you gotta hit them in the morning when they’re serving breakfast.
