"Frankenstein," the adaptation of Mary Shelley's classic written by Nick Dear and directed by Danny Boyle, has drawn rave reviews at Britain's National Theatre.
Now you can see it right here in Tucson, thanks to the Loft Cinema and National Theatre Live. The National Theatre broadcasts filmed versions of live performances into select movie theaters here in the states.
The Loft is showing two versions of the production - the lead actors in the London production alternate the roles of the creature and Dr. Frankenstein.
The version that screens Sunday has Jonny Lee Miller as Dr. Frankenstein and Benedict Cumberbatch as the creature. They switch in Tuesday's show.
Jeff Yanc, program director at the Loft, said "Frankenstein" drew immediate interest once the Loft released the schedule for the National Theatre Live series, which has earned a loyal audience since the Loft screened "Phèdre" starring Helen Mirren in 2009.

"Frankenstein" also has lots of buzz because it was conceived by Boyle ("Slumdog Millionaire," "127 Hours" "Trainspotting'). Critics have described the intermissionless production as feeling like a movie while at the same time remaining theatrical.
While advance ticket sales have been good, Yanc said there were still plenty remaining for both shows as of Tuesday evening.
It's suggested that no one under 15 come to see it because there is some adult subject matter in the play.
