The Leonard and David Schaeffer Memorial Guitar Competition will begin at 2:30 p.m. Sunday at the UA School of Music's Holsclaw Hall.
Four students — all performance majors — will compete for $2,500 in prize money. They are seniors David Talamante of Navajoa, Sonora; Alvaro Medizabal of Lima, Peru; Mark Wilson of Tucson; and Misael Barriza-Diaz of Hermosillo, Sonora.
All are classical guitarists, and each will perform for 15 minutes.
Funding for the competition comes from the Leonard and David Schaeffer Memorial Endowment, established to promote and reward excellence in guitar performance. The competition is unusual because its aim is to encourage undergraduates, said R.Thomas Patterson, UA professor of guitar.
The competition honors the memories of the Schaeffers and their father, Albert M. Schaeffer, an attorney in Tucson and Chicago and a jazz pianist.

She is a master therapeutic recreation specialist and earned national recognition for her groundbreaking work in music therapy with residents of the Handmaker senior community.
Tickets are $9 for the public, $7 for UA employees and seniors, and $5 for students.
