Country singer Chris Cagle was arrested on an assault charge early Thursday after performing at a charity concert at the Cactus Moon in Tucson Wednesday.
Cagle, who was cited and released on the misdemeanor, is accused of punching a man after the man’s girlfriend became upset because the country star declined to autograph something — he had already signed a number of items for her, Tucson police said.
A witness told police the 38-year-old woman became upset and began calling Cagle names, said Sgt. Mark Robinson, a Tucson police spokesman.
Police declined to say what occurred after that, but it resulted in Cagle hitting the woman’s 39-year-old boyfriend in the face with his fist, Robinson said. The man’s hat was knocked off but he said he was not injured and declined medical assistance.
An officer driving by the Cactus Moon, 5470 E. Broadway, shortly after 1 a.m. saw what he thought to be an argument in the parking lot and decided to check it out, Robinson said.

Cagle emerged from his tour bus, approached the officer and began explaining what had occurred.
“He was cooperative with the investigation,” Robinson said.
The officer then tried to conduct a mediation between Cagle and the man, but it did not resolve the issue, Robinson said. At that time, the man decided he wanted to press charges.
Cagle, 39, was in Tucson performing at a charity concert that was put on by KIIM-FM 99.5, Robinson said.
