The Arizona Registrar of Contractors busted a cabinet installer twice this summer for contracting and advertising without a license.
In one case Raul Diaz, who does business as R&R Custom Cabinets in Tucson, left a $6,800 job unfinished after he was paid $4,000, said Tyler Palmer, the registrar’s chief of staff.
Diaz pleaded guilty in Pima County Justice Court and was ordered to pay $3,000 in restitution and a $2,000 fine.
In another case he left a $14,000 job unfinished after he was paid $9,020, Palmer said.
He again pleaded guilty in court and was ordered to pay $6,722 in restitution and a $1,000 fine.
Contracting without a license or advertising for services without a license is a misdemeanor.
Licensed contractors must show they’re qualified, maintain a good record with the registrar, and be bonded and insured.

Other unlicensed contractors working in the Tucson metro area caught recently by the registrar include:
Rodney Castro, who was ordered to pay $22,800 in restitution for a 2009 case.
Charles Anderson, Michael Frey, Daniel Garcia, Kevin Lawrence, Lucio Murillo and Joseph Ponthieux, who each were fined $1,000 to $2,000.
