A meeting to discuss closing the U.S. Postal Service mail processing facility in Tucson is set for this evening.
The Postal Service says it will save $14 million if it closes the center as part of a larger effort to streamline operations across the country. The Cherrybell facility is one of more than 250 facilities nationwide being considered for closure.
The shutdown of that facility at 1501 S. Cherrybell Stravenue could mean a loss of 147 jobs.
Tucson customers would no longer be able to get one-day, crosstown mail delivery. The new delivery window would be two to three days, since all of Tucson's mail would have to go to Phoenix for processing before being driven back down.
Postal officials will hold a public hearing beginning at 6 p.m. to explain the impact of the move and hear from customers about their concerns.
