A UA law professor has been appointed to a Cabinet position in her native country of Nigeria.
Leslye Obiora will lead the Ministry of Solid Minerals Development, having been appointed to the post by Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo.
Obiora will oversee policy and enforce laws relating to mining and minerals, promote Nigeria's industry domestically and internationally and supervise the Nigerian Coal Corporation, the Nigerian Mining Corporation and the Nigerian Geological Survey Agency.
Additionally Obiora will be part of Nigeria's Economic Team, focusing on policies aimed at poverty reduction, job creation and wealth generation. Under Nigeria's laws, the Cabinet ministers collectively are responsible for national policies as the Federal Executive Council, chaired by the president.
Obiora, who received her law degree from the University of Nigeria in 1984 as well as degrees from Yale and Stanford universities, has taught at the UA since 1997. She has practiced law privately in Nigeria, Connecticut and California and managed projects for the World Bank.

The post is a one-year appointment. Obiora will be on leave from her teaching duties.
