An Arivaca woman is slated to go on trial Sept. 14 on charges she illegally captured the jaguar Macho B more than a year ago in a remote area southwest of Tucson near the Mexican border.
Janay Brun, 38, is also charged with conspiracy in the case.
Brun told the Arizona Daily Star last year that - under orders from private wildlife biologist Emil McCain - she placed female jaguar scat on Feb. 4, 2009 at the site where the jaguar was eventually trapped. McCain denied Brun's allegation at the time, but pleaded guilty in May of this year to having ordered the scat placed at the site, in violation of the Endangered Species Act.
The trial date was set by U.S. Magistrate Judge D. Thomas Ferraro, who is scheduled to preside over the trial. Brun's attorney, Michael Piccarreta, said he may seek a delay in the trial due to a scheduling conflict.
