An unidentified man was wielding two large knives when two Tucson police officers shot him Sunday morning, according to the results of a preliminary investigation.
The Tucson Police Department said witnesses at the scene reported seeing the man advance toward officers Zachary Barghout and Sean Callaway, both two-year veterans of the department. They fired their weapons and hit the suspect several times.
Barghout and Callaway rendered first aid to the suspect, who was taken by the Tucson Fire Department to Banner University Medical Center with life-threatening injuries, police said. He is in stable but serious condition. The officers were not injured.
Police said the shooting occurred at 6:45 a.m. Sunday during a welfare check of an adult male at an apartment complex on the 3200 block of North Alvernon Way.
Detectives are investigating the incident. As standard practice in all officer-involved shootings, the Homicide Unit will conduct a criminal investigation and the Office of Internal Affairs will conduct a parallel administrative investigation.
