Children carefully sound out words as they read stories to their new furry friends at the Read to a Dog event at the Murphy-Wilmot Library.
The library hosts a program on Wednesday afternoons for children of all ages and reading levels who read to certified therapy dogs.
"A dog is a nonjudgmental listener," said library associate Tobias Wehner. "They give unconditional acceptance."
Each child is given a reading log and is encouraged to fill it out by reading to each of the dogs. This gives the young readers a chance to practice their reading skills in a fun, safe environment.
"I think it's really cool," said Leah McAdams, 9.
All the dogs attend with their owners every week.
"I used to be a teacher and I miss the kids," said Dina Dalton, owner of Lucy, a 6-year-old golden retriever.
People are also reading…
"Now I can spend time with Lucy and the children. I get the best of both worlds."
