Aproned women with flour-covered hands laughed as they caught up with one another and made hamentashen, a traditional Jewish pastry, during the Women's League "Spice Up Your Jewish Holidays" cooking class at Congregation Anshei Israel.
The class, held March 3, focused on three recipes, a sweet hamentashen, a savory hamentashen, and a chickpea-and-rice dish. The foods are traditionally served during Purim, the Jewish holiday that this year falls on March 19.
Phyllis Broad shared her hamentashen recipe with the group.
"I have been making this recipe since 1960," she said. "It was a recipe that I got from my mother's friend. Since then it has been used many times."
Gail Mordka shared her chickpea-and-rice recipe.
"Food is a part of tradition," Mordka said. "It's a good way to pass on tradition to family and friends."
