The University of Arizona is seeking public help to restore a beloved campus landmark that will soon house the new office of UA’s president.
Today, the school kicked off a campaign to help raise $13.5 million to renovate Old Main, the iconic building at the heart of campus where UA’s first classes were held in 1891.
And President Ann Weaver Hart’s office confirmed what has been rumored since her arrival at UA last year: that her office, now on the 7th floor of a red brick administration building, will be moved to Old Main once work is completed next year.
The iconic building is in dire need of repair and restoration, especially the second floor and outdoor verandas, university officials say.
The work, which began a few months ago, will stabilize sagging sections and correct moisture damage and decay. Upgrades are also being made to the building’s heating and cooling and fire suppression systems.

Hart’s new spokeswoman, Andrea Smiley, confirmed the office relocation plan in an email to the Arizona Daily Star.
Hart is making the move because she was encouraged to do so by members of the Arizona Board of Regents, Smiley said.
