Sonoran Science Academy students took first and second place in the team competition of the Southern Arizona Region Mathcounts competition.
More than 120 students competed in the event sponsored by Raytheon. Mathcounts is a national middle school coaching and competitive mathematics program that promotes mathematics achievement through a series of fun and engaging “bee” style contests.
Walker Kroubalkian, Andrew Waugaman, Sarah McDuffie, and Jeremy Zimprich of Sonoran Science Academy-Broadway took first place.
Maxwell Thum, Finlay Parsons, Nitesh Puri, and Ethan Ngo of Sonoran Science Academy-Tucson followed in second place.
Seven Sonoran Science Academy students also placed in the top 10 for the individual competition.

Thum took first, followed by Kroubalkian in second. The top 10 finishes were rounded out by McDuffie in fourth, Parsons in fifth, Puri in seventh, Daniel Leon in eighth, and Waugaman in ninth.
Thum and the Sonoran Science Academy-Broadway will move on to the state contest on March 28.
