Here's what you need to know about claiming a tax credit for donations to charitable organizations.-
- Charitable organizations that qualify for the credit are those that help the working poor, or those that help children who are chronically ill or disabled. As of last year, certain foster-care organizations qualify as well.
- The maximum credit for a qualifying charitable organization donation is $200 for singles or $400 for married couples filing jointly, and the max for a donation to a foster-care organization is $200 for singles or $400 for married couples.
- You can contribute to both a charitable organization and a foster-care organization and claim two tax credits, but together they cannot exceed $400 for singles or $800 for married couples.
