The Coronado National Forest decided to keep open a portion of Sabino Canyon as a forestwide closure goes into effect at noon today.
Meanwhile, Pima County closed trails and trailheads that lead into the national forest.
Forest officials previously included the canyon in the closure with the rest of forest because of extreme wildfire danger.
The Sabino Canyon Visitor Center and the paved road that leads into the canyon will be open to the public between dawn and dusk.
Starting at noon, the forest is open only to law enforcement, firefighters, members of an organized rescue and Forest Service employees.
During the forest closure, people can travel on the Catalina Highway between dawn and dusk to the Ski Valley complex, Palisades Visitor Center and private property in Summerhaven, forest officials said. Motorists are not allowed to stop at any point along the highway.
