Letter: Party loyalty

I just read a letter to the editor in which the author mentions that corrupt and violent Democrats started the Civil War. While in essence this may be somewhat accurate because Democrats were staunch conservatives and Republicans were liberals, but the parties have done a complete 180 since the Civil War. The racist (Dixiecrats as they became known) turned into today's Republican Party. That's a fact that I learned in my high school American History class. Mr. Farrington's letter pointed out that our founding fathers never expected a party to become so thoroughly corrupt as the GOP is today. This party that was once liberal now wants to destroy the Constitution and any faith in our government. The writer goes on with his rant that "corrupt and violent" Democrats already did that. Our letter writer also has forgotten what happened on Jan 6. Violent and now criminals attempted to overturn the election. That's the GOP.
