Letter: PLEASE CHANGE COURSE

In many areas of the United States, K-12 education is in disarray and is strikingly inept in its main goal, teaching the students. Many reasons are offered, lack of funding, lack of parenting, cell phones, etc., but all are specious excuses. BUT THERE IS HOPE! Mississippi, one of the poorest states and historically near the bottom in test scores, has made a resounding recovery in the last 10 years, now nearing the top in test scores. This was accomplished without pouring outrageous amount of money into the education system, but installing methods of leaching that actually achieve the goal of educating the students. It is time to stop excusing our school systems. Go to Mississippi and find out how they have accomplished their resounding success, then implement it. I understand it will give the teachers unions heartburn and will truly upset the boffins in education who have destroyed quality education, but so be it. The kids come first and our first responsibility is to them.
