Dear Secretary of War:
I was surprised when you established an “Office of Religious Affairs,” the head of which will report to you. As you may know, the creation of such an office offends the spirit of the First Amendment’s establishment clause, even if not its precise words.
As a good Christian, you surely know that the Bible is replete with words praising peace. At the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus preached: “ I say to you, do not resist the one who is evil. But if anyone slaps you on the right cheek, turn to him the other also.” Matthew 5:38-39.
I do not urge you to abandon our Department of Defense. But I urge you to follow the teachings of your faith as much as possible. Twenty some years ago, we invaded and laid waste to Iraq in search of “weapons of mass destruction” that were never there. Do not do the same to the people of Iran.
