• Diamondbacks reliever Juan Gutierrez was put on the 15-day disabled list Wednesday because of inflammation in his right shoulder. Right-hander Zach Kroenke was recalled from Triple-A Reno. Gutierrez appeared in 20 games and was 0-0 with a 5.40 ERA. Kroenke was 4-0 in eight starts with Reno.
• Whitey Herzog says having his jersey number retired by the Cardinals is every bit as special as making it to the Hall of Fame. He said it was humbling to realize that every game at Busch Stadium, fans will see his No. 24 alongside other greats.
• Padres second baseman Orlando Hudson left Wednesday's game against the Cardinals with a strained left groin. Hudson hit a dribbler down the third base line in the seventh inning. He pulled up just before hitting first base with an infield single. Hudson immediately took himself out of the game and was replaced by Alberto Gonzalez. Hudson was reinstated from the 15-day disabled on May 18 after being out with a strained right hamstring.

• The Rockies placed pitcher Jorge De La Rosa on the DL Wednesday, a day after he tore a ligament in the third inning against Arizona. He will have tendon replacement surgery when the swelling goes down, possibly next week. The procedure will sideline him for a year. He was 5-2 with a 3.51 ERA.
• Cardinals left fielder Matt Holliday, who has a strained left quadriceps, did not start for the third straight game Wednesday. Holliday is the NL's leading hitter at .349.
