Former Arizona Wildcats football coach Larry Smith will be inducted into the UA Sports Hall of Fame this year, Arizona athletic director Greg Byrne announced.
Smith, who died in 2008, is one of three individuals chosen for the class of 2016. The others are former softball star Autumn Champion and former discus and shot-put standout Sean Shields. Four NCAA championship relay teams also will be part of the ’16 class.
Smith coached at Arizona from 1980-86, compiling a record of 48-28-3. The Wildcats went 9-3 in his final season, including a victory in the Aloha Bowl.
Smith coached at USC from 1987-92 and at Missouri from 1994-2000. He returned to Tucson after that. Smith succumbed to cancer in January ’08 at the age of 68.
