The cry of “politically motivated hit job” has become a routine, expected go-to for every politician accused of unethical or criminal behavior. So routine, in fact, it is often either totally disregarded as background noise or interpreted through partisan lenses. But the statement by itself could be either true or false.
Making that judgement might require examining the details of the case, considering whether due process is occurring, seeing if the facts of the case are disputed, and checking sources. However, this sort of digging takes time and reading the legalese in indictments is not for the faint of heart. Another approach, then, might be to reserve judgement until the investigation or trial is done.
Given the number of politicians who end up in court, maybe they should be reminded that their actions will be given a degree of scrutiny that the average citizen does not get. Cliches about heat and kitchens come to mind.
