It is disheartening when the legal system falls short of providing closure and redress to grieving families - as in the case with 17-year-old Luciana Fernandez, whose life was cut short when a vessel operated by George Pino crashed. As her parents aptly expressed in a recent interview, "It is insulting to our family, who has had no choice but to accept the consequences of the accident, to now also be forced to accept the numerous inconsistencies refuted by the FWC report."
Wrongful death lawsuits hold negligent parties accountable for their actions when such actions result in loss of life. In this case, the allegations of careless operation of the vessel warrant a closer examination of potential avenues for the family to seek justice.
In the pursuit of justice beyond criminal litigation, society must support and respect families who seek redress for their losses through avenues like wrongful death lawsuits. Only by acknowledging the full scope of potential accountability can we provide the closure and justice grieving families deserve.
