RE: Project Brown
Many salient points have been raised questioning the wisdom of data centers in the Tucson area. I have been impressed by the writings of the educated members of our community.
Yet, I am surprised no one has mentioned the hazards of massive potential e-waste. It is not clear to me what the Board of Supervisors agreed to in this regard. Will the computer trash be going to Los Reales?
Data center technology is highly consumptive of resources and infrastructure has not kept pace. Computer equipment has a relatively short life-span. A server hard drive average life is 5-6 years, if well maintained and refrigerated to 68 to 71 degrees. Technological improvements are occurring about every 18 months, making replacement potentially sooner.
Sadly, only about 22.3 percent of computer equipment is recyclable. If not disposed of properly, mercury and cadmium will be added to the garbage gravy at the landfill.
