I was shocked to learn there are 90,000 abandoned mines in Arizona that have never been properly secured.
Brian Matlock intends to change that.
Hidden mineshaft openings and lethal concentrations of toxic gases have resulted in too many preventable injuries and deaths.
In 2007, two sisters riding an ATV plunged down an open mine shaft, killing one teen and severely injuring the other.
Months later another teen plummeted to his death.
Mine safety is the biggest issue for Arizonans living in rural mining communities.
However, even people in Scottsdale are concerned about the dangers of nearby mercury mines.
To address the massive task of sealing off abandoned mines, Brian plans to enlist the help of citizens and volunteer groups in locating them.
