A Tucson couple has been sentenced in connection with unemployment fraud related to fraudulent filings for pandemic-related unemployment benefits, state prosecutors say.
The couple pleaded guilty to felony charges related to a scheme to defraud the Arizona Department of Economic Security of more than $60,000 in Pandemic Unemployment Assistance benefits, the Arizona Attorney General's Office said in a news release.
David Christopher Ellis, 42, was sentenced to six years in state prison. Gabbrielle Elizabeth Ellis, 44, was sentenced to seven years of probation. Both pleaded guilty in Pima County Superior Court to felony fraud. They also must pay $62,151 in restitution, the release said.
Between June and August 2020, the couple submitted false claims for benefits using the identities of other individuals — including inmates — and kept the payments, the release said.
