Five local principals have been named among the top 1 percent of principals in Arizona.
State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tom Horne and AZ LEADS3 — Arizona Leaders in Education for the Advancement and Development of Student and School Success — granted the Circle of Honor awards to 18 principals in Arizona earlier this week.
The awards include a $5,000 scholarship for the study of educational leadership.
The local honorees are:
● Monica Nelson, of Coronado K-8 School in Amphitheater Public Schools.
● Julie Sherrill, of Sunrise Drive Elementary School in the Catalina Foothills School District.
● Sheila Stolov, of Hermosa Montessori School.
● Joyce Geranis, of Collier Elementary School in the Tucson Unified School District.

● Theresa Sonnleitner, of Soleng Tom Elementary School, also in TUSD.
Principals were judged on criteria that included student achievement as measured by state benchmark tests such as AIMS and AZ LEARNS, commitment to a school for three or more years, performance, a superintendent's nomination and a survey of staff and parents.
Officials also visited each school to conduct interviews and observe the principals in action.
Circle of Honor winners also will serve as mentors to educational leaders for the next two years. This is the second year the award was given.
